Upgraded To A Smart Home Ecosystem For Your Ev Charger And Hot Water Controller

Client Overview

A homeowner with an existing solar panel and battery storage system recently installed an electric vehicle (EV) charger. However, the initial installation — done by a third party — was underwhelming in both performance and energy efficiency, failing to integrate properly with the solar setup.

Challenge

The original EV charger was a basic unit with limited solar compatibility. Additionally, the current transformer (CT) clamp — crucial for monitoring energy usage — had been installed on a sub-board, meaning the solar battery system only supported one consumer unit instead of the entire home. As a result, the solar system was underutilized, and much of the home’s potential for energy independence was being wasted.

Our Solution

We took a comprehensive approach to maximize the home’s use of solar energy:

  • Replaced your existing old EV charger with a solar, battery compatible EV charger, a smart charger is capable of using surplus solar power to charge the EV.
  • Relocated the CT clamp from the sub-board to the main incoming supply, allowing accurate monitoring of the whole property’s energy consumption and generation.
  • Reconfigured the battery system, enabling it to support the entire home rather than just one consumer unit.
  • Installed a MyEnergi Eddi, a smart device that diverts excess solar energy (including surplus from the solar battery) to heat the home’s hot water via the immersion heater.

Outcome

The property now has a smart, fully integrated energy ecosystem. The Smart EV Charger uses excess solar energy to charge the vehicle when available, while the Eddi ensures that any remaining surplus is put to good use by heating the home’s water — rather than being exported back to the grid.

With the CT clamp now accurately monitoring total property load, the solar battery operates far more effectively, providing backup and savings across the whole home.

The homeowner now enjoys:

  • Maximized solar self-consumption
  • Lower electricity bills
  • Efficient EV charging using green energy
  • Hot water heated with surplus solar power
  • Future-proof, smart energy management

Key Takeaways

  • Correct CT clamp placement is crucial for accurate monitoring and smart energy distribution across solar, battery, EV, and hot water systems.
  • Upgrading to Smart EV Charger and Smart Solar Diverter creates a seamless energy ecosystem that reduces grid reliance and boosts renewable energy usage.
  • Retrofitting a poorly installed system can unlock the full potential of an existing solar and battery investment.
