Solar Battery System Optimisation & Smart Integration

Overview

We were called out to a property where the homeowner suspected their solar battery system wasn’t performing correctly. Despite multiple engineers visiting over the years, the issue remained unresolved.

The system was substantial:

  • 66 ground-mounted solar panels
  • 20 kWh of battery storage
  • Installed to help power a new ground source heat pump

The Challenge

After inspecting the setup, we discovered that the Solax battery inverter’s meter was only monitoring a single consumer unit, rather than the total load of the property. This meant the system was only supporting a portion of the home — severely limiting the performance and benefits of such a large installation.

Our Solution

We:

  • Identified the fault within minutes, surprising the customer who had dealt with years of confusion and missed diagnoses.
  • Rewired and relocated the meter to correctly monitor the entire property’s energy usage.
  • Ensured the solar and battery system now supports the full property load, including the ground source heat pump.

Further Improvements

We took things a step further by reviewing how the homeowner managed their EV charging and hot water:

  • The EV charger was a basic, manual unit the homeowner switched on during sunny days.
  • The hot water cylinder was heated solely via the ground source heat pump.
  • After consulting with the client, we installed:
  • A MyEnergi Zappi to replace the standard EV charger, enabling automatic charging using surplus solar energy.
  • A MyEnergi Eddi to divert excess solar power to heat the hot water cylinder, reducing the strain on the heat pump and improving overall efficiency.

The Result

With these improvements in place:

  • The entire property now benefits from full solar and battery support.
  • The EV charges automatically from excess solar generation.
  • Hot water is now heated efficiently with surplus green energy.

Savings & Impact

The homeowner is now saving over £120 per month on electricity bills and finally getting the full benefit of their investment in solar and battery technology.
